INCUMBENT LEGISLATOR

NICK LORUSSO

WILL DEFEND HIS

HOUSE SEAT THIS FALL

State Representative Nick Lorusso announced today that he will seek re-election to the Louisiana Legislature, District 94.

Lorusso was victorious in a special election held in March that was called after the resignation of veteran legislator Emile “Peppi” Bruneau.

Lorusso, a Republican, is honored to represent the citizens of District 94 and is looking forward to seeking his first full term to the Legislature. According to Lorusso, much was accomplished in the last session of the legislature. “We passed some important legislation that provided real reform and tangible results for the voters in my district,” said Lorusso.

In the spring session of the legislature, Lorusso supported important legislation that increased teacher salaries to the Southern average and for the first time ever fully funded higher education and provided $30 million for pre-K programs. Key insurance reform was passed, as well as tax credits for citizens who face higher insurance premiums and follow the state’s strict new building code. Legislators budgeted $200 million for coastal restoration and flood protection and $600 million for infrastructure improvements, a record amount dedicated to the state’s crumbling roadways. For our overburdened taxpayers, vital tax deductions, which were eliminated in the Stelly tax increase, were restored by legislators.

The last legislative session provided key victories for residents of District 94. There was good news for residents participating in the Road Home program, as the State of Louisiana committed $1.2 billion to cover the shortfall in the program. For City Park, $15 million was allocated and a special taxing district was created that will allow the park to receive additional funds for necessary restoration. In addition, non-flood assets from the Orleans Parish Levee Board were protected from a takeover by the City of New Orleans or NORA.

Despite the measurable progress made in the last session, Lorusso believes that there is plenty of unfinished business that needs to be tackled by the legislature. “I will push for more fiscal accountability by the legislature, additional tax relief for citizens and businesses, first class flood protection and meaningful ethics legislation,” said Lorusso.

Lorusso, 39, is a lifelong resident of District 94. He and his wife, the former Michelle Merritt, have been married for 14 years and have three children: Nicholas, Sophia and Katherine.

Lorusso is a practicing attorney with 15 years of civil law experience.  He also serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the JAG Corps of the United States Army Reserve.

If re-elected to the legislature, Lorusso will have seniority over the more than fifty-five (55) new members of the State House of Representatives, which will provide a real advantage for the voters of District 94.

District 94 includes Lake Vista, Lakeshore, Lake Terrace, Lake Oaks, Lakewood, Lakeview, Country Club Gardens, Parkview, City Park, and parts of Mid-City, Gentilly and Faubourg St John.

The election for state representative is set for October 20th.  The last day to register to vote in this election is September 19, 2007.
